NSW Local Government Election 2024 – Candidate Briefing (Murwillumbah)

PLEASE NOTE: This Humanitix event listing is for the Murwillumbah 9 am – 12 pm session on 4 June 2024 only. Another Murwillumbah session will be held the afternoon of Tuesday 4 June and two additional sessions will be held in May, at Council’s Tweed Heads administration office. On 14 September 2024, councils across NSW will hold elections.
To assist prospective candidates to prepare, Tweed Shire Council is hosting a series of candidate briefings in May and June to provide a thorough understanding of the role of Councillor.
The four briefing sessions will be hosted by former Mayor of Lismore Jenny Dowell OAM, with the support of Council and Local Government NSW. Potential candidates need only attend one session, with the same content to be repeated at each event, as follows:
- Tuesday 7 May: 9 am – 12 pm at the Harvard Room, Tweed Heads Administration Office
- Tuesday 7 May: 5.30 -8.30 pm at the Harvard Room, Tweed Heads Administration Office
- Tuesday 4 June: 9 am – 12 pm at the Auditorium, Murwillumbah Civic and Cultural Centre
- Tuesday 4 June: 5.30 – 8.30 pm at the Auditorium, Murwillumbah Civic and Cultural Centre
The candidate briefing sessions will contain an array of information, including:
- The benefits and importance of local government
- Understanding the role of Council and the role of Councillor
- A typical council structure
- Challenges of the role and how to meet them
- The importance of diverse representation on Council
- Importance of speaking out on key issues and how to do this confidently
- Meeting procedures and rules of debate
- Support available including information and networks.
Prospective candidates interested in attending a briefing must register via this Humanitix listing or call Council on 02 6670 2400. Council has engaged the NSW Electoral Commission (NSWEC) to administer the election on its behalf. Registrations for candidates are now being accepted by the NSWEC and close on Monday 5 August 2024.
