Zines & Collage Workshop
Details
The history of zines is one of rebellion, DIY and sub-cultural, low-fi publication. Often used as a vehicle to challenge the status-quo and give voice to the marginalized, the zine was always a cheap and quick way to disseminate information and opinions to the world without permission. Over the years I’ve used zines as a way to quickly collect words and images to use as fodder for a larger body of work, to pull ideas together into a cohesive aesthetic and once made a zine to celebrate the birth of my last child and mailed it out to announce it to the world.
In this workshop, you’ll be surrounded with all of the materials you’ll need to fashion your own zine using a simple instant book structure. It’s a chance to relax after a day of work, study or parenting and create without judgment, expectation, technique or rules. You can’t make a zine wrong, but it is important to give yourself an opportunity to create with absolute freedom.
Materials are provided, but please feel free to bring your own stash if there is a particular project you would like to work on.
We’ll take a brief look at how contemporary artists and everyday makers are using this accessible format to talk about everything from the mundane to politics, to gender and daily life observations.
This workshop is suitable for all levels of artistic experience and is perfect for the beginner. Ages 15+
