Starting 2:00 pm from the lighthouse carpark, learn to identify and ethically harvest seasonal wild foods—native plums, figs, nuts, greens and medicinal plants—then gather natural materials to create a communal sunset mandala. Finish with an accessible, gentle mindfulness and embodied flow to settle into the evening. Expect hands-on plant ID, sustainable harvest techniques, sensory tastings, cultural stories, and a short somatic yoga suitable for all bodies. Led by local foraging expert, Jessie and nature guide and yoga teacher Emma, this workshop blends plant identification, ethical harvest, sensory tasting, and a gentle embodied practice to close the day—rooted in cultural reverence and deep respect for country.
Overview:
This is a hands-on, immersive afternoon and early-evening experience focused on wild foods foraging and connecting with nature. You will learn to identify, locate, and ethically harvest seasonal fruits, nuts, seeds, greens, and medicinal plants. The foraging walk is followed by a guided sunset mandala making using natural materials gathered on the walk, and an accessible mindfulness and embodied flow to settle into the evening and the landscape.
What to Expect
Meet and Orientation
• Time and place: Departing from the car park at the Fingal Heads Lighthouse Walk at 2:00 pm.
• Welcome: Brief introductions, safety and ethics briefing, and an outline of the afternoon.
Foraging Walk and Plant Skills
• Guided identification: Jessie leads plant ID sessions focused on edible and medicinal species local to the area.
• Harvest techniques: Demonstrations of safe, sustainable harvesting and simple processing (drying, basic preparation).
• Cultural context: Stories about traditional uses and respectful relationships with the land.
• Hands-on practice: Participants practice locating and identifying plants, with emphasis on seasonal highlights such as native plums, figs, nuts, greens, and tree saponins (nature’s soap).
Sunset Mandala Making
• Creative practice: Using responsibly gathered natural materials, Emma guides the group in creating a communal mandala as an act of gratitude and attention.
• Cultural reverence: The mandala is framed as a temporary, respectful offering within which we will celebrate our connection with the land which we will then dismantle and give it back to Mother Nature.
Accessible Mindfulness and Embodied Flow
• Gentle movement: Emma leads a short, inclusive somatic flow that is accessible to all levels and bodies.
• Mindfulness practices: Breathwork and sensory attunement exercises to deepen connection with place and self.
• Closing: A short reflection and invitation to carry the experience into daily life.
Practical Information
• Duration: Approximately 3(ish) (2:00 pm start, finishing around sunset).
• Fitness level: Moderate. The walk is gentle but may include uneven ground and short slopes.
• Accessibility: The mindfulness and movement session is adapted for all bodies and abilities. Please contact us ahead of time if you have mobility needs so we can best support you.
• Weather: Rain, hail, or shine. Bring appropriate clothing for the conditions.
